MAHB will not rush KLIA2 construction

KLIA Satellite Terminal, boarding gatesImage via WikipediaMAHB will not rush KLIA2 construction
For one, I am glad that the project is finally kicked-off ! It is KLIA2 , a catching name at least for me. Indication from the Prime Minister that it will be a "mega low cost terminal in the world " is something has yet to be seen. As I understood from various newspaper reports, the development will not purely on construction of airport terminal, but with end in mind of giving passengers " a totally new airport experiences " similar to London Heathrow Terminal and Amsterdam, Schipol International Airport.
As Malaysian, and as one of my "2010 Merdeka" wish, I would love to see KLIA to be at par or better than its competitor none other than Suvarnabhumi Airport and Changi International Airport. My wish, KLIA shall be either No. 1 or No. 2 airport at the very least in SEA region for a start, and then No. 1 airport in the world, providing the stakeholders " a totally new airport experiences ". I believe that KLIA has so much value propositions to the stakeholders, better than its regional competitors.

I have no doubt and I do have faith in Malaysia Airport Berhad's management to deliver only the best for KLIA specifically, and Malaysia in general.

Coming back to the " totally new airport experiences " concept , below are some points that in my points of view MAHB may want to include as part of the" experiences " for its stakeholders ;

Branding - this is very critical for all the stakeholders to have a matching between "how they perceive KLIA" and "what they experience" while @ KLIA. What is the KLIA 's "Soul" ? My "to be" perception as frequent user of KLIA  are as follow ;

1. KLIA is a metropolis and duty free zone city .

This will address the chicken-egg situation [ i.e. EITHER number of airlines OR number of passengers [ volumes]. As a frequent traveler, flight connection of flight is the ONE most critical element when I decide which airline shall I travel with, as I do not want to spend hours waiting at the airport  doing nothing especially if I travel with my kids or my parents. As frequent transit passenger at the same airport to travel to the city perhaps is not an option, so what are the other factors for me to consider using KLIA as my transit airport ? None other that " total airport experiences" .

Perhaps a typical transit experience in KLIA :-

a. Checked-in at the hotels with "home-stay concept" or "rumah kampung" of all the 13 states- something Malaysians with 5 star facilities. Relax by the swimming pool, sauna, Moroccan or Turkish Hammam, Balinese spas OR/AND

b. Watching the latest movies at cinema city or at open areas under the shining stars , play bowling OR/AND

c. Kids play and enjoying themselves KLIA's own kid's world and wonderland OR/AND

d. Ladies shopping and shopping branded items at duty free shops till dead drop ! offering quality products from Malaysian own designers or well known brand like Gucci, Prada, LuisVuitton and why not having Boxing Day in KLIA ??  OR/AND

e. Enjoying the cafes [ with cafes and tea from all over the world ] or lunch or dinner with international of choices  in  KLIA own botanical garden with superb scenery, birds chirping OR/AND

f. Window shopping at similar to Jonker's Walk in Malacca, OR/AND

g. Enjoying mini civilizations of the world, world of Malaysia or 7 wonders of the world OR /AND

h. Enjoying the green yet modern metropolis city with no cars and smokes as all facilities within walking distance or mode transportation using bicycle or electric buggy or electric car OR/AND

i. Visit Little Paris, Arabian Square, Little Prairie, Fifth Avenue, Madison Square, Tianamen Square, Amazon and etc OR/AND

j. Watch Formula 1 at Sepang, and take next flight to any destinations ! OR/AND

k. Airlines loyal members can redeem their points at KLIA Planet outlets and establishments OR/AND

l. Visit "tropical fish aquariums" and dolphin shows OR/AND

A lot more, under one sun and KLIA planet, an integrated and well connected Metropolis City  !
Imagine , All the above, within 10-15 minutes from the main terminal by train ! Shall I call it like " Travel around the world in eight(8) hours. Experience KLIA Planet  "  ?

Marketing and Promotions - MAHB shall work together with all the airlines that land at KLIA to package the tours and always have promotions to have always something different every time of the year. It is all about packaging of products, great products come with value for money prices !

An alternative, or passengers can experience shopping experience at the terminal without going out or opt to travel to the downtown of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Truly Asia. If those facilities are available at KLIA, without doubt I will always use KLIA as my transit airport !

2. Obviously, if the number of passengers choose KLIA as the transit airport of choice and Malaysia as top 10 places to visit combine with promotion and packages from MAHB, no doubt more airlines will make KLIA as their hub for the Far East region.

3, With Open Skies Agreement will eventually take place in 2015, encourage low cost carriers to have JV with local companies similar of what Air Asia, Air Arabia and Jetstar are doing, and given the regions will be the next economic growth with HUGE populations, the time is NOW or NEVER. Why wait till 2015 and this will create healthy competition and trust that Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia will be able to survive the competition !

4. Then, seamless check-in of luggage and self check in that they can check in their luggage without carrying them at the airport similar to the Sky Terminal concept !

Wow ! This is what I call " Total New Airport Experience" !

My Friday Note : What is next for Malaysia ?

A composite image of icons of Kuala Lumpur and...Image via WikipediaI read an article written by an expatriate in Malaysia about his view on Malaysia. A perspective from expatriate living in Malaysia and fond of Malaysia. He wrote, what are the next big things in Malaysia i.e. places to visit in Malaysia ? He admitted that he loves Malaysia so much. He made comparison with Malaysia's neighbor none other than Singapore with Marina Sand Resort and Universal Studio were recently opened for visitors.

I read also an article written by one of Raslan's brother, Karim Raslan about similar heading, how he would like to see Malaysia in the next year to come politically.

Having working outside Malaysia, I heard so many remarks and comments about Malaysia. Following are remarks that was made to me about their experiences in Malaysia ;

Qatari # 1: "Malaysia is a good place to visit for family, but boring for singles."
Qatari #2 : " Malaysia is a nice country and I like it "
Qatari # 3 : " Malaysia offers more choices and cheaper compared to Singapore "
Indonesia # 1 : " What I do not like about Malaysia is the taxi drivers and I was approached by "an uncle" that offers portfolios of " prostitutes " "
Egyptian # 1 : " I was approached by "an uncle" in the bus who showed me portfolios of " prostitutes " and I did not believe myself it is happening in Malaysia "
Palestinian # 1 : " You have such a wonderful and beautiful country, my friend "
British # 1 : " I thought Twin Towers is such an ugly building, yet I was wrong ! and traveling with Air Asia is damn cheap "
Philippines #1 : " Oh my sister visited Kuala Lumpur and she said, it is a wonderful city, and I plan to visit Kuala Lumpur to see myself "
Moroccan # 1 : " You have such a beautiful country. Yes, I did have bad experience with taxi driver , but it happened everywhere "
Indian #1 : " My husband was in Kuala Lumpur, and he loves the city very much "
Indonesian # 2 : " Oh , Vincci shoes in Malaysia is so cheap and affordable with good quality "
Palestinian # 2 :" My wife was in Paradise shopping in Malaysia, and Vincci was her favourite shop "

So, based on the above, I can deduce that majority of the people who I bumped into have a good experiences to tell about Malaysia, but what are next big things about Malaysia ? Is it reasonable enough to envision that Malaysia is "Paris of the East" i.e. the most visited country in the world one day ? If that day ever to happen, when it will be ? What it takes to be Paris of the East ? Paris boasts herself as city of Romance, Culture, Fashion, Parks, Shopping and etc. So much to see in Paris and France despite strong and stiff competition from its neighbors like London,Rome, Madrid, Berlin and Frankfurt, just to name a few.
Personally, in my view I believe Malaysia or Kuala Lumpur can be Paris of the East or " Pearl of the East " sooner or later if the following are taken into considerations ;

1. Greater Kuala Lumpur Project is a reality

If the project and initiative by the government will become a reality, there is no doubt Kuala Lumpur will be one of the most visited city in the world. I would imagine traveling around Kuala Lumpur is a breeze, convenient

2. Kuala Lumpur or Malaysia needs an identity

Kuala Lumpur needs an identity and a brand to call its own. It is like when people mention Kuala Lumpur, one shall have flashes of images playing in his/her mind. Just like Paris , city of love and its cafe, fashions, art and museums. Me ? I have image of Twin Towers and the traffic, and the former is very unfortunate. As for now, Kuala Lumpur is neither here nor there.I must say a mix of Bangkok, Singapore and Jakarta and Vietnam to certain extent.

3. More shopping complexes would not do justice !

Unique shopping experiences do ! Some quarters think that having more shopping complexes with help to drive tourism in the country. Yes, it is one aspects of it as it has its multiplier effects, but shopping complexes are not all about Kuala Lumpur or Malaysia. What different shopping experiences it made in Dubai ? London? Singapore ? Jakarta ? Bangkok ? Basically, the brands in Kuala Lumpur are the same in everywhere, and some brands even not available in Kuala Lumpur and price wise, Kuala Lumpur are not much different from other shopping destinations.

Kuala Lumpur has to establish itself as city that provide different shopping experiences to the tourist, catering from back packers to the high income and rich shoppers. That is what we call shopping heavens, when you can find anything under the sun with such a competitive price and quality of products which are unique. We are not lack of pool of talented designers.

While building and constructing shopping complexes are not wrong at all, the design of the those shopping complexes shall be unique - fushion of traditional Malays, Chinese, Indians which align to the concept of Malaysia Truly Asia ! Why not taking queue design from from Islamic, Indian and Chinese civilization with elements of modernity and environmental friendly to make it unique appeals to the shoppers, at the same time something that the shoppers are looking forward to enjoy the whole experiences of shopping in Malaysia.

3. Integrated Unique Development

I must say , Malaysia can be divided into few main part with its own attractions and uniqueness. The Greater Kuala Lumpur, The Northern , Southern and East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia and also the East Malaysia. Yes, we have the so called economic corridor, and my view this economic corridor shall have it own unique identity. I have heard so much about Iskandar development and how about the rest ? These economic corridor shall not stand on its own, and in one way or another shall be integrated development, complementing each others. I know there is Legoland project is coming out in Iskandar Malaysia, and I have yet to hear similar attractions in other economic corridor. Malaysia is a country with so much to offer, but I do not see we are really exploiting it to the maximum. From my personal experiences, for example Morocco - each of the states offers its own attraction to the tourists at large for example Agadir - with its beach and wind surfing activities, Marrakech- with its unique red colours and its park & outdoor activities, Fes and Meknes- Medieval Cities, Ouazarzate- desert related tourism and Hollywood of the Africa, Tangiers- port city and its night life, Casablanca- the heart of business in Morocco. Yes, Malaysia is doing the bit of it, but not a wholesome and integrated approaches. People do know Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi but only certain segments knows about Sabah & Sarawak, Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang, Johor and Perak, simply because there is no establish identity for the mentioned states. That where I am coming from when I did mention that each of the corridor shall have its own uniqueness and attractions to make people keep coming back to Malaysia for different reasons.One might argue, Paris or Morocco do have decades of long civilization dated centuries ago but my argument , why not we create our own civilization for the future generations. It is about sustainable and responsible development.

4. Recreating and Rewriting history
Great civilizations happened not in Malaysia as compared to the Europeans, Rome, Turkey, Morocco, Iraq, Syria [ Muayyad], Iran [ Parsi], Egypt and etc. However, Malaysia shall recreate and rewrite the history in accordance to own versions like America is doing. We shall balance the civilization with spiritual aspects of it. Learn from those histories and rewrite it by taking the best practices and not to repeat the same that bring down those civilizations. Each of the corridors, shall have their own civilization for future generations.

5. People and human capital development

Another thing, Malaysia shall be the centre of excellent in the Far East, standing in the eyes of other great universities like Harvard, Standford, Oxford, Cambridge and Al-Azhar.
It takes the political will to do all those. Yes, at one time it is easier said than done but with all concerted efforts, it can be done. Rome is not build in one day, so do Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur. Put Kuala Lumpur in the world map, and one day I wish I read in the newspaper ;
" Malaysia the Pearl of the East- Most visited country in the world "- New Straits Times
" Kuala Lumpur a role model for sustainable and responsible development "- United Nations
" Kuala Lumpur ranks No. 1 as the most livable city in the world "- NST
" Malaysia ranks No. 1 as country to live in "- Newsweek
" Malaysia is a model for OIC countries development "- AlJazeera International
" Malaysia is a model of the concept of prospering the neighbor "- World Bank
" Malaysia ranks No. 1 in attracting investment and doing business in the world "- CNN
" Malaysia is the centre of excellent in Islamic Banking and Finance "- The Star Malaysia
Incha Allah......one day !

Time to make a change : In support of good cause

"A good cause can become bad if we fight for it with means that are indiscriminately murderous. A bad cause can become good if enough people fight for it in a spirit of comradeship and self-sacrifice. In the end it is how you fight, as much as why you fight, that makes your cause good or bad." - Dyson, Freeman
Got a message of a friend of mine @ Nina ;
"This reminds me of a saying: It's not so much of the size of the dog in the fight, but more of the size of the fight in the dog'. When you fight fair and diligently, you will win."
I am helping a friend of mine, Dan Wilson who will be participating in " Walk The Wall 2010 Hong Kong ", organized by International China Concern, a registered charity providing full time care for hundreds of children and adult with disabilities. Sahur Note : A wake up call !

“In 2009, Indonesia overtook Malaysia on an income per capital basis. In 1968, Malaysia’s income per capital was double that of Singapore. Today, Singapore’s is four times higher,” iCapital said.

In terms of Malaysia’s budget deficit trend, its assessment is that the country appears to be following in Greece’s footsteps.

Indonesia has in fact lowered the government debt, even with the eruption of the global financial crisis. As of 2010, Indonesia’s targeted budget deficit is 2.2% of GDP.

The Malaysian Government has committed to reduce its deficit to 5.3% of GDP this year. It aims to reduce this figure to under 3% by 2015.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reading this article has lifted my eye-brow, what have gone wrong ?

1. The investors are shying away from the country;
2. The economic growth has been stagnant for quite a while;
3. The stock market index barely reached 2,500 points;
4. The education level of the workforce at minimum level, SPM ;
5. Stucked in the middle-income group for a very long time;

What have gone wrong ? asked myself ? How could we do it better ?

Below are few of my random thoughts about why we are no longer the darling of investors as compared to our neighbours. Why even in weather forecast report for all cities all over the world, in most of news channels CNN, BBC, DW, France24 alike, "Kuala Lumpur" is not even mentioned ?

1. Start accepting the facts

This is the real challenge, we Malaysians simply too "arrogant" to accept the facts. Like it or not, we are in the state of denials. We always point fingers to others. We told the people that the reports are inaccurate and bias, they are jealous of Malaysia's progress, they are assessing only on certain aspects and bla bla. We denies those facts and figures, if the latter are not in our favour. My view has always been, be more listeners and accept the facts, that we could have done it better. What areas we are lagging and what are the lessons learned ? What are nexts ? We, Malaysians shall start asking ourselves, what Toyota describes as " Five (5) WHY s ". But first, learned to starte accepting the facts !

2. No Actions Talk Only [NATO]

Look around us ! We are becoming NATO society . Datuk Seri Idris Jala was blasted when he made a statement that Malaysia could become another Greece, if the trends continues. Look at the report, and Datuk Seri Idris Jala was indeed correct to point it out. He was chided and blasted from all corners ! If I were them, I shall take what Datuk mentioned as precaution and warning, and shall work hard and find ways for it not to happen. I still remember, when Datuk Seri headed Malaysia Airlines. He was tasked to transform the airlines, and what he received at the very beginning was a "very emotional and irrational" remarks from the chosen few. Unfortunately.Less talk and more actions and result, please.

3. History repeats itself

Yes, it was then RM 1= SGD 1. I remembered very well, I can even but a "chickidies" with SGD coins at "Kedai Runcit" in remote village in Tanjung Karang. Yes, gone those days, but one thing for sure, we can repeat the history. What were the causes and factors those glory days, that can't be repeated ? My view, those days leaders worked for the nation and the country. The made lots of sacrifices , both professionally and personally when the most satisfying moment was to see the country and the people make progress everyday.

4. Mindset change and behaviour

This is the most critical factors, that all quarters people at all levels from CEO of the Fortune 500 companies to a cleaners, gardeners, school children shall have the right mindset and behaviour of a great nation. Sounds to vague and so big, when it is not actually and doable. This can be achieved through education system that nuture the young minds to have the right mindsets and behaviour. The parents shall play the roles too, when their kids are still young. Emphasise on the need to have good educations, and eventually be good citizens of the nation.

5. Learn from others

Learn how countries in the USA and Europe , even Singapore become great nations and we shall look back at  Turkey, when it was a great nation and super power before ? In Europe, healthy competitions among the countries help the continent to prosper. How London became the largest financial hub in Europe ? How German become a country well known for its engineering ? How Paris become the most visited city in the world ? How Netherland position itself who have great ports management ? How those countries, despite competing each other become so good ? I could see the trends in our part of the world, when Singapore [ Financial Hub], Indonesia [ largest domestic economy], Thailand [ Tourism] and Vietnam [ Industry ] and Malaysia ? [ mix of bit here and there ]. We have our glory days, and Malaysia shall position and brand herself to compete with the rest of our neighbours. May be we shall be the "Great Modern Ottoman Empire"
We shall emulate the best practices and yet, we move forward our ways and our mould.

Malaysia is a great country, and we shall leverage on our diversity to match the tagline, Malaysia Truly Asia. We shall work harder to put Malaysia on the map again [ at least during the weather forecast, for a start] . I read in the news few measures and initiatives by the government to bring Malaysia to the next level, and unfortunately I could sense some laggings in the implementation stage. Let us people from all quarters, including the opposition to work together to bring Malaysia and make a frog leap, to stand in the eyes of the world.

As for my contribution, as individual ??  I am learning from the best, and I shall return back to Malaysia to share my knowledge and experiences with the future generations of Malaysians, to make Malaysians individuals, with the right mindset and behaviour with the right capability and capacity. At least, that is my plan.

Gold Dinar in Kelantan ?

KOTA BARU: Kelantan paved the way to become the first state to introduce the gold dinar and silver dirham currency.
Speaking when launching the Syariah currency Thursday, Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said the state would strive to expand the use of the gold dinar and silver dirham in all transactions, including paying civil servants' remuneration.
However, there were still many technicalities that had to be addressed by the state government, he told reporters after launching the dinar gold and silver dirham here.Islamic Gold Dinar
Read more @ The Star Online
The Kelantan state government has been toying with the idea of implementing the use of gold dinar for long time, and I still remember our Prime Minister then, Tun Mahathir Mohamad threw the idea for the world to revisit the use gold as the trading transaction to replace the existing paper notes, as it used to be. While many sceptical with the idea, if it was successfully implemented then, why not now? I do realize it is easier said than done, but I am sure there must be a solution to it and way out. Political gimmick ? I reserve my comment, but I lauded the Kelantan state government for such brave action, to go against the crowd in implementing it. They do recognize that there will be hiccups during the implementation, but worth trying.
I would imagine, that now the salary of the government servant will be tied to the market value of the gold. For instance, if the price of gold today, RM 100 per gram, so for someone who earn RM 1,000 will get around 10 grams of of gold. Depending, on when he will sell the gold, he will either incur loss/gain, depending on the market value or transact value for the day or given time, and any balances in the account will be tied to the gold market value. It is like the saving account = gold dinar account which are currently being offered by Kuwait Finance House, Malaysia. That is what I understand with this whole concept of gold dinar transaction. One thing for sure, gold is one of the stable commodity in the market with the price tend not to fluctuate that much. I would like and am interested to know how this eventually work, and educating and creating awareness to the affected party would be and shall be next in the agenda of Kelantan state government. In any case, there shall not be any party who are victimized with the new system, and shall be fair and equitable and just for the public , i.e. the RAKYAT and it shall be done in the interest of public.
Anyone has idea and would love to share on this ? I would love to hear from the readers.

Finally : CIMA introduces new pricing

CIMA wants to give students and professionals around the world every opportunity to succeed in their career.

We’ve lowered our entry price from £150 to £60. All new students will now have their first subscription fee waived, saving £90 upon registration.

Whether you aspire to climb the management ladder, want a career that crosses international boundaries, or simply want more career options, the CIMA qualification is now more accessible to you.

Read more at CIMA Global

I remember very well back in 2003/04 [ if not mistaken] for CIMA to revisit the fees for students, as I felt it was simply too high relative to other professional qualification like ACCA. My argument, that the latter shall not be the case, as CIMA should operate more effectively and efficiently, and an increase in fees every year might send wrong signal that CIMA might not manage effectively. I did check with my other friends, who chose ACCA over CIMA, and one of the consideration was the fee and cost. 1GBP to RM 6-7 then, making CIMA qualification beyond the reach for ordinary Joe who just started his career.As such, CIMA is regarded as " exclusive qualification for selected few ".

It was then, that organizations back in Malaysia, preferred ACCA and other qualifications, over CIMA. CIMA was regarded as not really relevant in the accounting fraternity and industry in Malaysia. However, that was changed in later year as CIMA aggresively promoting it as the most relevant qualification in the business world, and its qualification transcends beyond accounting fraternity. Employer in UK prefer CIMA members, but in Malaysia, still the acceptances and perception among the Malaysians Inc like PETRONAS is/was still low, even though PETRONAS was recognized as one of the CIMA training provider.  It is kind of catch 22 situation in Malaysia. However, one thing did not quite change was the fees. Then what made CIMA change its mind in Year 2010. However, the picture is different with SHELL and other multinational organizations.

It will be bit shallow, if I say decision to have CIMA over other professional qualification is solely based on the cost factor alone. However, it does count as one of the important factor to consider. To a Malaysian, why shall I choose CIMA when it is more expensive to complete at the same time, not the qualifications preferred by Malaysia Inc. and big 4 audit firms ? I think it is a fair choice and reasonable consideration.

It will also not quite right to consider Malaysian market only, but the fact that Malaysia is consider as one of the key and focus country, may in one way or another influence the rest in the regions to follow. While CIMA is regarded as " professional qualifications accepted worldwide" still the reality is that it is not easy for CIMA members in Malaysia to work in other countries and cross border mobilization is very much case to case basis, unless you are working in a multinational organization like SHELL, TESCO and HP.

At least now, there are changes happening and interesting development in CIMA that will make it more relevant qualification of choice. The introduction of Islamic Finance course, lower cost to register as CIMA student, collaboration with local accounting bodies and local institutions in Malaysia show that CIMA is indeed moving into the right direction. More could be done, perhaps the introduction of business controls to be part of one of the strategic level papers [ risk, governance , statutory audit, self-assessment, internal audit ] may make CIMA appeals to the mass not only the commercial organization, but also specific industry like advisory and audit firms.
